Living Cinema is a special program of the Microwave Film Festival, which will take place in Songkhla in August 2024. The festival aims to support young filmmakers and the film industry by providing a platform for screenings and activities. Living Cinema focuses on exploring new possibilities in film and the relationship between cinema and audiences, encouraging creative experimentation and engaging viewers in a unique experience.
The live performance "Southern Dawn: Arun Tai" narrates stories based on Songkhla and the southern part of Thailand through the use of cinematic techniques and performing arts. It is presented by three actors : Awat Ratanapintha, Bhumibhat Thavornsiri and Nat Kitcharit under the direction of Puangsoi Aksornsawang.
Southern Dawn tells the story of 'Arun,' three men with memories connected to areas in the city of Songkhla. They return to a place in the old town district: The Shrine of the City Pillar, Sala Wat Yangthong (Temple Pavillion) and The Red Pier. They discover fragments of memories related to films that reflect various forms of relationships. These memories span different periods, some of which they may have forgotten or still remain.
The process involves working closely with the actors to collaboratively develop monologues that connect to both the physical space and personal questions. These monologues are then woven into the fictional characters, allowing the actors to contribute their own experiences and insights while exploring the characters' depth and relevance to the story.
During the performance, the audience follows each actor in sequence, starting at the shrine. Each segment lasts around 30 minutes. Once the first performance is completed, the audience walks together to the second location, and afterward, they proceed to the final performance at the pier to watch the sunset. The performances are accompanied by live music, featuring traditional Thai instruments such as the saw (Thai fiddle) and flute, performed by students from Thaksin University, enriching the experience with cultural depth.
